Kökar, Åland Islands — 2020

A rare southern storm had settled over the Åland archipelago in the middle of July.

Our sailing journey ended unexpectedly in Kökar, where the wind and waves held us on the island for three days. When the storm was at its strongest, we walked along a narrow nature trail toward the southern cliffs of the island.

The sea had turned restless and heavy. Waves rolled in from the open Baltic and broke violently against the dark granite shoreline.

Standing on the rocks, surrounded by wind, spray and the deep sound of water hitting stone, the moment felt both raw and timeless — the meeting point of sea and land.

This photograph captures that single instant when the wave rises and collapses into the rock, a brief expression of the force carried across the open sea.
