Frozen Light

Särkkä Island, Naantali Archipelago — Finland, 2026

Frost flowers forming across newly frozen sea ice, illuminated by warm winter backlight.

This photograph was created while walking along the winter shoreline of Särkkä Island in the Naantali archipelago on a cold winter day in 2026. The sea had recently frozen, and the surface of the ice had begun to grow delicate frost formations — small crystalline patterns that spread slowly across the thin ice like tiny flowers.

As the low winter sun appeared above the distant forest, its warm light travelled across the frozen surface. For a brief moment the frost patterns caught the light from behind, revealing their fragile structures and casting long shadows across the ice. The contrast between the cold textures of winter and the warm glow of the sun created a quiet yet striking scene.

Frozen Light captures a fleeting moment when frost, ice and winter light briefly aligned, transforming the frozen shoreline into a landscape of delicate structure and glowing reflection.
